24 Hour Zine Challenge!!
Presented by the Portland Zine Symposium, Independent Publishing Resource Center, and Cosmic Monkey Comics...
Who: You and other ambitious zinesters!
When: Beginning July 18th at 10:00am and going until July 19th at 10:00am!
Where: Cosmic Monkey Comics (5335 NE Sandy Blvd. - Next to the Bike Gallery)
Why: Because zines are awesome and it's International Zine Month! And maybe also so that you've got one more zine for your PZS table...
What To Bring: Any supplies you like to make zines with! Also, maybe pillows, snacks, and blankets..
In order to meet the challenge, the PZS 24hr Zine Challengers MUST make 24-page zine of an original, on-the-spot conception straight up to the final product in 24 hours straight. The zine should be of suitable size and technical difficulty so that this truly is a challenge for individual zinesters. The PZS 24hr Zine Challenge is brought to you by Portland Zine Symposium, the IPRC, and Cosmic Monkey Comics.
We will be providing some supplies (paper, glue scissors, a copy machine), snacks, and drink - anything you can bring will help! We are rivaling the 24hr Zine Challenge ZAPP is hosting in Seattle, so we hope to have a live video feed set up between our two events.
Preregistration is REQUIRED as space is limited to 30 spots! Email pdxzines@gmail.com or call Blue at (503) 453-5839 to register!
Special In Store Signing with Comic Creators Scott Allie and Todd Herman.
SCOTT ALLIE started his comics career as a self-publisher and is best know as the editor of some of the most notable comics in recent years, including CONAN, The UMBRELLA ACADEMY, The GOON, BUFFY the VAMPIRE SLAYER and HELLBOY, all from DARK HORSE COMICS. His writing includes contributions to licensed properties including STAR WARS at Dark Horse Comics and BUFFY at POCKET BOOKS, but his focus has always been horror comics, most notably his creator-owned series, The DEVIL'S FOOTPRINTS, a sequel to which is underway. We will have copies of his newest collection of the SOLOMON KANE series, written by Allie and based on the character created by ROBERT E. HOWARD.
TODD HERMAN has worked on many projects over the years, including CUT, THE FOG and work in DARK HORSE BOOK of the DEAD and GOON NOIR at Dark Horse Comics. He is now working on Fall of Cthulu with Boom Studios who also just published Galveston and Zombie Tales Vol. 3.
Cosmic Monkey Comics is pleased to announce that the internationally-acclaimed cartoonist Jason will be joining us from 4-7 PM on Wednesday, June 10th for a signing at our store. Jason, who hails from Norway, is a Harvey Award and two-time Ignatz Award winning artist and writer known for his minimalist, and sometimes devastating, graphic novels starring anthropomorphic animals. His work has received glowing reviews from Time magazine, and was serialized in The New York Times in 2008. Jason's newest book, "Low Moon," collects his New York Times comics along with four other short stories, and will be available at the signing along with his numerous other graphic novels from Fantagraphics Books.

This event is extra special, as we have taken our lead from David Chelsea and made this a benefit for S. Clay Wilson. An underground legend, Wilson took a nasty fall and sustained a severe head injury recently. He is still hospitalized and we all know how expensive medical care is. If you're unfamiliar with Mr. Wilson, follow these links to catch up.

Local writer, Steve Duin, provides an update on Wilson's condition.
San Francisco and Los Angelas have had a couple benefit events already. Here, here and here.
We are glad for this opportunity to acknowledge the contribution and impact of this unique artist. Paypal arrangements are in the works, but in the meantime, any contributions you wish to make directly can be sent to :
